Detailed description


Cap: 8-11 cm across, first ovoid, later convex to plane, if old indented, center is not umbonate, smooth, dull, from the margin inward up to ne fifth to the center grooved striate, silver gray with a gray brown component, usually with one or several whitish veil remnants, margin is obtuse, grooved crenate.
Hymenophore: lamellae are white, broad, free, edges are finely floccose.
Spore print: white
Spore: broadly elliptic, 9,8-13,1(16) x 7,2-9,5 μm
Stem: 8-10 x 0,8-1,5 cm, cylindric, toward the base enlarged to little bulbous, first solid, later hollow, fragile, gray brownish mottled on a whitish background, base is enclosed by a membranous white volva.
Flesh: white, thick in the center, thin toward the margin, odorless, taste is sharp and irritating, especially after being chewed for a long time.
Habitat: solitary to greagrious in hardwood forests or mixed hardwood conifer forests, on dry calcareous soils, grows from summer to fall.
Edibility: edible if cooked
Remarks: similar with Amanita vaginata which has a umbo and globose spores.
