Detailed description


Cap: 8-18 cm across, first ovoid, later campanulate convex, then plane, dull to satiny if dry, if wet little lubricous viscid, yellow brown, reddish brown to gray or olive brown, toward the center darker, up to one fourth translucent striate, covered with thick veil remnants, remnants are dingy gray white if young and brownish if old, almost in contact with each other in center, increasingly separated toward the margin, margin is acute.
Hymenophore: lamellae are first white, later little brownish, broad, free, edges are flocculose.
Spore print: white
Spore: globose, 10,4-14,1 x 9,7-14 μm
Stem: 12-23 x 2-4 cm, cylindric, toward the base enlarged, young solid, old hollow, fragile, whitish, apex is finely striate, base is without a vaginate volva but girdeled with 2-3 scaly zones, above the zones dingy white to brownish floccose.
Flesh: white, thin, odorless, taste is mild, nutty.
Habitat: solitary to gregarious in hardwood and coniferous forests, at forest sedges, in forest meadows, in parks, on calcareous soils, grows from summer to fall.
Edibility: edible only cooked but not recommended
