Cap: 6-20 cm across, convex when young, later flat, chocolate brown to black reddish, later lighter, dry, slightly sticky, thick.
Hymenophore: whitish, later yellowish to greenish.
Spore print: olive brown
Spore: elliptic 12-15 x 4-5 μm
Stem: 5-15 x 3-6 cm, thick, rather large, club-shaped or bulges out in the middle, brownish, finelly reticulate on the upper portion and smooth or irregularly ridged on the lower part.
Flesh: white, thick, pleasant taste and odor.
Habitat: in hardwood and coniferous forests, mostly on calcareous soils, grows in summer to fall.
Remarks: could be mixed with other Boletus.
