Cap: 2,5-7 cm across, young hemispherical, later convex to flattened, dented in the center, smooth, dull, first fine velvety, later often torned into small flakes, violet to wine or dark red, also with green tones, fading to to margin, margin first smooth, later slightly striate, cup skin peelable to the middle.
Hymenophore: first are lamellae white, later creamy, narrow adnate, some forked.
Spore print: cream, IIb-c
Spore: subglobose to elliptic, 6,1-8,4 x 5,3-7 μm, ornament, with warts which are morely net-like connected with narrow ribs.
Stem: 2,5-6 x 0,8-1,5 cm, cylindrical, full to hollow, fine longitudinally veined, white, on whole surface or only partially purple to pink tinged.
Flesh: white, odor herring-like, taste pleasant.
Habitat: gregarious in hardwood, rarely in coniferous forests, by chestnut, oak and beech, on dry, acidic soils, grows from summer to early fall.
Remarks: Chemical reactions on cup flesh: FeSO4 pale salmon pink, Guaiac- light green, Phenol- violet.
