Cap: 5-12 cm across, fleshy, irregularly rounded, convex to umbonate, upper surface is finely squamose, red to black brown, margin is lobed, undulating incised, sharp and concolorous with the cups.
Hymenophore: coarse pored, creamy to yellowish, pores are somtimes decurrent, often spotting, if handled yellowish, irregularly angular rounded.
Spore print: white-hyaline
Spore: broadly eliptic, with drops, 8,5-12 x 7-8 μm
Stem: 3-6 x 1,5-3 cm, usually eccentric, more rarely lateral, cylindrical to clavate bulbous, finely squamose, yellow to orange brown, solid.
Flesh: fragile, soft, whitish, odor is pleasant, taste is mild, nutlike.
Habitat: solitary or concrescent to form groups on soil in montane tu subalpine conifer forests or mixed conifer hardwood forests, grows from summer to fall.
